5 features I hope for in the next generation smartkika device..

Let's face it, SmartKika devices are so popular because of their price and probably their durability. Even though they don't have bells and whistles of flagship or mid-tier devices they work just fine for average users. Here are 5 features I wish Vodacom could include in their next generation device. 1. Latest Android Sure Vodacom might pull a stunt like we give the latest Android version while they provide Lollipop out of the box, but we for sure know there is nothing latest with that. Marketing stunts aside, Google wants more people to taste their latest sweets, so they developed Android Go: An OS that targets low entry devices with low RAM and not a ton of storage. Smartkika fits right into this and it'll be cool to see Oreo on such a cheap device. Please do it Vodacom, please! 2. A Slightly Larger Screen, 5" Hoping for 6" or more is not reasonable since that could bump up the price higher. Maybe removing the capacitive keys can help them get t

Get started with Android app development

App development in Lesotho is not the talk of the town, even though there might be good reason to not become developers, opportunities surpass the counterfeit reasoning. A change is made today, by me and you, not by strangers we don't even know. If you want to, let's do it, not tomorrow but now. I am not an expert with developing applications, and more specifically, Android applications. But developing is like art, the learning is a bit sketchy but once you've gathered the knowledge and tools, the whole process become fun and rewarding. Here I'm not to tell a story, but guidelines on getting started. Its not gonna be the whole package but this I believe is enough to get you started. 1. You'll need a decent computer, but decent means different things depending on tasks to be done. Running development tools like Android Studio which is an official Development tools for Android apps requires more resources than running minimal softwares like word processors. Here

My Vodacom Lesotho app is dead or Vodacom have no idea the app is.

Despite its shortcomings, My Vodacom Lesotho app managed to scoop in over 5000 downloads. The reasoning is short and simple, Vodacom gave customers free data to download it and also data after the install; well who'd say no to that. Also, I downloaded the app more than 5 times because it kept crashing. If the app is working for you You have control over remote devices: You can set up an app on one device and use a SIM on another device so you can buy bundles remotely. On my time with the app, I have experienced several disconnections and had to register my number again and again as result. With this app, you can access your account balances without interacting with USSDs which currently suck. Or should I say you would; oh! Really, how can this be? Vodacom seem to be having technical issues with connecting people to their servers. The app is down at the time of writing, we have reached out to them and will let you know as soon as we hear something. Stay tuned for that.

5 Features in Windows 10 you should be excited for

Image
arstechnica.com Besides the visual enhancements, Windows 10 has been a major OS improvement that caught a lot of attention from both minimalists and power users. All the following features are available on Windows 10 (1809 build), if there is a feature missing on your PC, it can either be you are on an earlier build or you are using a different version of Windows. Enjoy 5 features in Windows 10 you should be excited for. 1. Multiple clipboards Goodbye to those old habits of copying multiples items, to find out only the recent item is available, the next generation is gonna think we lived in dark times. Say hello to multiple clipboards. You can now copy items and Microsoft save those for you, at a later time you can use the combination windows key + V to choose what to paste. Ctr + V still works as normal; paste the recent item copied to the clipboard. To get this into working; go to Settings , System , and Clipboard where you'll enable the magic with a toggle. 2.

3 Ways to share the internet with friends and family

Image
Credit: jooin.com Let's face it, our mobile devices are with us more than they have been. It's probably impossible to imagine life without them, the internet gave them a reason to catch our attention. With all that, the internet is the topic you should be familiar with. What we do with it may provide reasons why we need to know of ways to share the network with people around us , just from a smartphone. 1. WiFi hotspot If your device is able to send and share files using Shareit, you can celebrate because you are in the mix. You'll need to have enabled mobile data to share the internet with friends around you. If you navigate to settings , then more it is there where you see  Tethering and portable hotspot . A step further takes you to WiFi hotspot : Everything about sharing the internet using mobile hotspot lives there. Or you can Go to settings and search " Wifi hotspot " if your device allows you to. Or any other way, take a pick! 2. Blue

Swallow this pill, ads are coming to WhatsApp messenger soon...

Ever since Facebook acquired WhatsApp, bringing ads to the messaging platform was a thought that we only needed time to finally see in life. I know others do hate ads but I kinda have mixed thoughts about them. So long those ads won't fill up the whole screen; I don't mind them plus that's how they'll make money. On which section of the app will these ads live, you might be asking. According to Android Authority, they'll be in the status section. Apparently, people spend most of their lives, sharing and viewing statuses so it makes sense to integrate targeted ads in that section. Ads are a love or hate thing, but if WhatsApp has won our hearts we'll just learn to live with them (I wish!); I don't think you'll switch to other messaging services like Yahoo, Google Allo or BBM. "Is BBM still a thing?"   We can only wonder if this implementation won't do away with end-to-end encryption or the security that we currently have. Those are

Textra; a delicious, SMS app that is simply elegant.

Image
Good old SMSs are a thing of the past, but we still rely on them here and there to get our jobs done. Textra brings a modernized version of that functionality. A default messages app can do just fine but this app will make you think again!. A developer by the name Delicious had been in work and this is proof of their hard work. Design The app has a nice coat, and if you care about the look, which you should; this won't disappoint. There is an option for a dark mode if you prefer that, plus you can make things a bit dark or go even hardcore with a black background; dark mode is nicer in the dark and it even looks and functions better on AMOLED screens. Functionality The app is heavily animated, things move around a lot; animations guides and helps you get the best experience you will not find elsewhere. This an SMS app so all you expect is here. Textra provides a nifty feature to differentiated your contacts with colors, you can either manually choose colors for each c

How to work around a low on storage(memory) warning!!!

Image
The easiest way to get a low storage warning out of your way is to factory reset your device, woah! Don't do that unless you really need to delete all files in your device. After a factory reset all your info with be gone and there is no way to recover it unless you did a backup beforehand. Here are less aggressive methods that won't delete your files unexpectedly. 1. Clean the cache App developers make use of cache capabilities to store data so their apps run smoothly especially those that rely on networking. This data is not permanent because it can be deleted by the OS to make more room for other apps so you can manually clean it up if you need to claim more storage. There are two ways to do this, either per app or for all apps. N.B .  You can manually do this or look for an app that will do the job for you. One way is to go to settings, storage and then tap on Cached data to clean up. And the other way is to clean the cache for each app individually. Go to Se

How to make a futute-proof purchace for a device

Image
Whether you're on the hunt for a new phone or planning to upgrade soon. Below we discuss 5 things you'll need to consider, in order to make a future-proof purchase. Money is almost always a final decider, but don't bring it to mind until you literally decide to bring one home.  1. Latest OS version Luckily enough, we have two operating systems we believe have a future. Windows Mobile is dead, Blackberry died a long time ago. We now have Android, iOS, KaiOS, so our choices are not as complicated as before. Both Android and iOS have tonnes and tonnes of apps in their respective app stores but which one to go with? We can't tell. What we can say is, iOS has a great support with updates while Android, well let's say not so great support. If you decide to give Android a try, go for Android 5.0(Lollipop) or above. Apps are vastly dropping support for earlier versions of Operating Systems so the latest the better. Applies to Android : It's either OEM just d

Charging a phone on a computer has no harm, but benefits

Image
Questions: Does charging your devices on a computer kill their batteries? Does a computer slow down the charge speed? My opinions: These same old questions keep resurfacing among the skeptical community. Until we fully believe that these smartphones are, well smart. We will keep panting old problems on newer devices. Without getting too technical, an average smartphone battery needs a 5V(volts) adapter to get the electrons moving (charging). Since a computer is capable of delivering so many volts, your device will kind of charge as expected (if it happens to be an average smartphone). Kind of, because some devices support fast charging. Fast chargers charge your device quickly as opposed to regular chargers. If your device has no fast charging goodness, you're okay with using a computer to juice it up. The answer: So the answer is, no and no. The computer doesn't kill a battery and it's not responsible for a slow charge(If your device doesn't support qu

What makes my device to slow down?

Image
It might be more often than you would like that your device fails you in public. The best remedy is to know it is capable of before getting it out in the wild. - What makes my device to slow down? To best answer this, we have to answer the question, what slows them down in the first place? 1. Random Access Memory (RAM) The phone's RAM gives apps room to temporarily store files to boost up their performance. It resides closer to the CPU so getting files from RAM is more effective (because of its architecture and other factors). Apps on the foreground apps temporarily store their data in the RAM to speed up the processes, and a few others in the background takes advantage of its presence to do their daily tasks swiftly. (Keep background apps as minimal as possible to reserve more RAM for other apps). This thing is expensive hence why you won't have too much of it on a device. Not all OEMs are confident enough to tell you the amount of RAM your device has but there a

Picture-in-Picture videos in WhatsApp Messeger but only in Beta (updated)

Image
If you hate waiting for features and don't mind testing some stuff; WhatsApp Beta is here for you. It's important to point out that availability of features in beta doesn't guarantee to make their way in the final build of the app and apps in beta can act funny and your data might be on the line. I have been using a beta version for about a month now and never ran into issues so you might have no problems too. Today we will discuss two features you'd love to try. You can enroll in a beta program in the PlayStore but that gets full too quickly so you can get the app from apkmirror website or just click here to get there quickly. (Version 2.18.301) 1. The first feature is the ability to autohide pictures sent from people(groups) in your gallery. Group members can sometimes go out of hand and share images you wish other people cannot see, so having a peace of mind that whatever is shared on WhatsApp will never reflect on your gallery is a life saver. You c

Never Loose Important Data Again on Android!

Image
If you are using an Android device, this post will change your life for the better. Make sure you have a Google account, and if ever wondering what's this! This is an account associated with Gmail and other popular Google services like  YouTube  and the Google PlayStore  of course. Android devices usually require a Google account at startup, just log in your account and save yourself from misery in case your phone dies, get stolen or anything that could damage your personal data. On Android version 5.0(Android Lollipop) and above, your device will prompt you of a google account that was synced with your device after a reset so make sure to never forget it. The startup menu cannot be bypassed as you might have done before(on older versions of Android). Before talking forever about things you might haven't seen in your life let's discuss a serious matter that almost every individual come across,  Loss of data. Okay, Google claims to be the giant who can keep yo

Don't Update SmartKika VF685 device, Just not yet! Please!

Image
Unless you are familiar with boot loop and know how to get past that, don't upgrade your Smartkika VF685 to firmware  120HJG1. ( Thank you Vodacom for deleting all my data, thank you! ) This is why: I received an OTA(Over The Air) update, downloaded and tried to upgrade but for whatsoever reason my phone was stuck in the boot loop. Restarting it never help, neither is factory resetting the device.  My device was low on memory so I thought that might be a cause, but no it wasn't.  Luckily I know a thing or two about boot loops, so I flashed a stock firmware from the official site and I was able to get out of the loop. After booting up my device, I checked for an update and installed it again but back to square one; my phone was stuck in a boot loop again! So low memory was no issue. I contacted the officials and I'm awaiting a response. What to do: For now, don't upgrade! Here is the thing; our millage may differ. Things like this happen but for un

You can use WhatsApp on a PC! But you still need the phone

Image
In this post, I'll walk you through the process of using WhatsApp on a PC. Like the title says, we'll still need our mobile devices. N.B: You can run WhatsApp on a PC with no need for your phone, but that comes with a price to pay. You can download and install an emulator on your PC, install WhatsApp and do all the crazy stuff. We're not gonna get into that now. We can do this in two ways, either through the browser or via an app. Okay, we're gonna hit two birds with one stone and let's get to that. Using the app. We’ll get one from WhatsApp official site. Here is the link but a simple search will get you there also. N.B The installation process might take time, and you might need to agree to some terms, make sure you do that. Using the Web browser. We’ll have to visit web.whatsapp.com. And it's that point that we need our phone . Either using the browser or app (The process is the same, at-leat for now) We open WhatsA

Want a new PC and don’t know which one to buy? Welcome to our guide.

Image
Credit: Freepik Criteria of choice As much as it’s important to buy a PC that meets your course type, it’s not ideal to stick to that. Take a PC as an investment than a gadget; Purchase a unit that will be helpful in the long run. With that out of the way, my recommendation is to get one that has at least 4GB RAM. RAM alone does not guarantee a better PC but it’s a safe bet to go with. Nowadays a brand doesn't matter much, the reason being the manufacturers import processing parts from the same wholesaler anyway. Course types This article targets the scholars but not limited to them alone. BSC Computer Science For all who wish to or are pursuing their career in Computer Science, you don’t need a high-end PC; a decent PC of 4GB will do just fine. A high end one (8GB of RAM) will be essential if, along the way, you’d decides to work with Image Rendering software like Blender (An open source software to create 3D videos) or run a software development Ap
