What makes my device to slow down?

It might be more often than you would like that your device fails you in public. The best remedy is to know it is capable of before getting it out in the wild. - What makes my device to slow down?
To best answer this, we have to answer the question, what slows them down in the first place?

1. Random Access Memory (RAM)

The phone's RAM gives apps room to temporarily store files to boost up their performance. It resides closer to the CPU so getting files from RAM is more effective (because of its architecture and other factors). Apps on the foreground apps temporarily store their data in the RAM to speed up the processes, and a few others in the background takes advantage of its presence to do their daily tasks swiftly. (Keep background apps as minimal as possible to reserve more RAM for other apps). This thing is expensive hence why you won't have too much of it on a device.

Not all OEMs are confident enough to tell you the amount of RAM your device has but there are ways of finding that out.
If on Android; Go to settings and look under the memory section where you should see what amount of RAM your device has. If you had luck, don't worry there are apps that will help you out; try CPU-Z Hardware info.

2. Unbound storage(Local storage)

Apps store data on a device, e.g. A messaging app stores texts on a local storage so you won't need an internet connection to visit older messages while other apps store big files like videos and pictures. The best bet is to keep maintain free storage to 50% for optimal performance; this enables smooth read-and-write processes between the CPU and a local storage. There are different types of storage devices and as you might have guessed; you'll have to fork out more for better ones.

Viewing total memory of your device can almost be done by a File Manager. If you cannot find it, google it.

3. Central Processing Unit(CPU or processor)

The CPU is responsible for processing all the information that is displayed on the screen, in fact, most of the processes are handled by this guy. It has a limiting factor which is the clock speed. Different processors have different clock speeds. The speed determines the rate of caring out tasks per given time; so the higher the clock speed, the better the performance a device possess.

Computers almost always enable you to view this info. Right click on This PC(on Windows) and select properties on the pop-up menu.
An app will be helpful in you happen to be on either Android or iOS.

4. Software(Operating System and Apps)

We have different Operating Systems and Countless apps in their respective stores. What can also hinder a device from performing smoothly is an unoptimized OS. iOS 12 breathed a new life to Apple devices this year, and that was proof of what Software is capable of. Many folks recommend Linux distros to bring new life to older hardware.

If you happen to use Android, there are lightweight apps that will come in handy. Facebook lite is a testimony, Youtube Go and a few other Google apps can help with slow devices too.

On Windows on Mac, it's somehow obvious which OS you have, you can navigate to Settings and then About to see what OS is on your computer.

5. Growing Old

Just like other equipment, our devices grow old and get deprecated as time passes by. Memory chips and other components inside our smart computers depreciate; even though some parts are swappable others are just as good as purchasing a new device.
WhatsApp and many other apps have stopped supporting older devices running an earlier version of Android, and iOS has dropped support for its older hardware. So long as technology improves, devices will grow old faster than we wish. Since software is responsible for devices to keep the lights on, dropping support for older hardware is a sign that we have to wave our beloved devices goodbye.

As we grave for the latest tech, the older machines become void and eventually useless.
